Featured Ref- Snaps Smear

profile by Hannah Mog

In his role as the head referee of the Bruisers, Snaps Smear is dedicated to the girls and takes ensuring their safety very seriously. Before the girls even step foot on the floor Snaps has taken part in setting up the track and either himself or another ref has skated it first. Snaps is present for 2-3 night practices a week and always present at Sunday morning practices. Living in Racine his commute is 45 minutes each way but feels that it is “worth it”. At first Snaps was interested in the Bruisers from a spectator position, “for the same reasons any other guy would be interested”. However, after then best
friend Sugartank (fiancé as of the Summerfest bout) invited him to become part of the team as a referee he soon became a foundational member of the organization. He says he is drawn to the differences between the members and
how everyone appreciates those differences. The league has drawn the refs in as part of the community of derby and treats them as team members. As the first season winds down Snaps would like to express his gratitude to the city of Milwaukee for their support of the girls for the great first season. “There will never be another 1st season, these girls gave birth to derby in
Milwaukee.”
