Featured Bruiser-Poptart

#10.2, Rushin' Rollettes, "Nonstop" profile by Hannah Mog
Poptart, rarely referred to as Brenda, is co-captain of the Rushin Rollettes. As a self proclaimed “Femi-Nazi” it could be said that she fits the role of the stereotypical roller derby girl. Though, if there is one thing that can be learned from Milwaukee’s beloved Bruisers is that there is no stereotypical derby girl. Poptart fits the mold in that she is a strong advocate for woman’s rights and feels that it is important to have female dominated sports. However, she does not live up to the party girl typecast that many see in leagues nationwide, in fact she considers herself to be a “lightweight” and keeps her partying to a minimum. She is highly dedicated to the league, so much so that she moved from her home in Waukesha to Bayview to be closer to the action and says that derby is her life.
In her role as a hairstylist, a typically feminine occupation, Brenda has come across those who don’t understand Derby and challenge its validity as a sport. Being involved in athletics in the past, Poptart feels that Derby is one of the most challenging sports she has participated in. The workout she undergoes each Sunday morning (as well as 2-3 nights a week) not only keeps her body healthy but mentally prepares her for the week ahead, furthermore relieves aggression. She feels that the encouragement between the women and the feminist overtone of the organization is foremost in the league and hopes it won’t be overshadowed by the appeal Of seeing women in short skirts throwing each other around.
